Exercising with Multiple Sclerosis can be daunting and full of problems and challenges. However, exercise is one of the most powerful tools available to people living with multiple sclerosis. Research continues to show that regular, appropriately prescribed exercise can not only positively influence mobility, function, fatigue, wellbeing and long-term health outcomes for people with MS, but also help to slow degeneration as exercise is neuroprotective. To overcome the challenges around exercise that are specific to MS, such as heat sensitivity and neuromuscular fatigue, someone living with MS does have to change how they exercise.
I was recently invited to provide a webinar for MS Ireland on “MS and Exercise: Why is it vital and how do you do it with MS?“. This webinar explores the latest evidence surrounding the disease-modifying effects of exercise in MS and explains why and how exercise needs to change for those living with MS. Drawing on extensive clinical experience working with people living with MS, I discuss the importance of understanding fatigue, heat sensitivity and symptom flare-ups when designing safe and effective exercise programmes.
The webinar provides practical guidance for both people living with MS and health professionals, including:
- The latest evidence on exercise and neuroprotection in MS
- Why exercise prescription needs to change
- Interval training
- Understanding heat sensitivity and its impact on symptoms
- Practical heat management tips
- Strategies to better manage neuromuscular fatigue during exercise
- How to identify appropriate exercise intensity and volume
For people living with MS, this webinar provides practical details of how to get the best out of exercise while managing your MS symptoms.
For physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and other health professionals, the session provides evidence-informed clinical insights into the complexities of prescribing exercise for people with MS, particularly for individuals experiencing significant fatigue, heat sensitivity or progressive mobility decline.
